This characteristic building at Westerstraat 187 dates back to 1867 and was originally built as a school. During the last few decennia it served as a Regional Education Centre (ROC). The building as we now see it in the centre of the Jordaan area is the result of various renovations, the last and most drastic of which took place in 1954. It currently has five floors with a total floor area of approximately 5,500 m2. In February 2007 Marcel Wanders and Aedes purchased these premises from the Amsterdam Centre Urban District.

The Westerhuis is being developed into a multifunctional accommodation for creative businesses. Marcel Wanders and his design studio were the first to move into the premises. For the remaining rooms a selection took place among the many applicants. The ground floor has been reserved for Moooi gallery. The premises has an open character. As a result, a flagship for art and cultural entrepreneurship has arisen, giving an impulse to the creative industry in the city centre and attracting national and international visitors as well as people from the direct vicinity.
